French courts do not have contempt power. When they issue injunctions, the only available tool that they have to ensure compliance is astreinte. Law firm merger market distinctly tepid during 2d quarter
The law firm merger market cooled off significantly during the second quarter of 2009, according to reports by a number of legal consultants. Hildebrandt International's latest MergerWatch found that nine U.S. law firms completed mergers and acquisitions during the quarter, compared to 33 during the first quarter. Similarly, Altman Weil's most recent MergerLine reported that mergers fell from 25 in the first quarter to seven during the second quarter — a 72% decrease.

A second phase of the case is expected to focus on Mattel's claims that MGA stole trade secrets.
Second round of job cuts at DLA Piper
DLA Piper is laying off 21 associates and 100 staff members from its U.S. offices. The cuts are the second round of layoffs in the law firm's domestic offices this year. In February, it let go of 80 associates and 110 staffers. A firmwide memo on Wednesday announced that its reductions in February were designed to avoid cuts later in the year. "Unfortunately, economic weakness has continued," said the statement by Global Chairman Francis B. Burch Jr., Joint Chief Executive Lee Miller and U.S. Managing Partner J. Terence O'Malley.
For some firms, an extra step for the newest recruits
After three years of law school, a hundred grand of debt and weeks sweating out a bar review and exam, it's time to start practicing law in earnest, right? At a handful of firms, the answer is fast becoming "not yet." These firms are putting new recruits through additional apprenticeship programs that they say will better train their attorneys for life at a law firm and for handling clients.
THE MIDSIZE HOTLIST
The Midsize Hot List includes 20 law firms — selected from a flood of nominations — that demonstrate exemplary innovation in practice management, fee arrangements, attorney recruitment and retention, and business development, especially in the face of current economic challenges. These firms have shown particular agility in adapting their practices to the recent changes in the legal services market. They range in size from 50 to 300 attorneys and are located across the country.
